Not "Just A Kid" - Tenchi Universe
There are a lot of people who like to say that Sasami is "only a kid" in the Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo series, and that her true "purpose" only really exists in the OVA with the baggage that is Tsunami and her history.
This is fine, if you happen to like living inside boxes. But I don't. And it seems very clear to me that there's something more to TU Sasami than just being Ayeka's cooking-mad little sister.
Although there is no mention of Tsunami by name, at one point in the series Yosho does mention a powerful "God" which invested in the people of Jurai special magic. Like in the OVA, Ayeka has a royal tree ship called Ryu Oh which she crashes on Earth and regrows there. Also like the OVA, Sasami has NOT got a tree ship - or at least, in the OVA, she has Tsunami-fune. In Tenchi Universe, her ship crashes and that's the last we ever hear of it. Always considering that Sasami's ship is indeed her ship, and not just a vessel she borrowed to come see Ayeka. After all, Ayeka is surprised to see her - "How did you get all this way by yourself?" That suggests that Sasami doesn't have a ship yet. Or, stretching the logic, her ship isn't like all the other ships.
That is reaching a little, I know, but the rest of what I have to say is not. When Tenchi first meets Sasami, there is a flitter of autumn breeze and then she's suddenly there. There's no sign of her being beamed down from her ship, or anything like that. She's just a little girl standing among the leaves, laughing at him as he falls over on his backside. Then, just as quickly, she's gone. The incident unsettles Tenchi enough that he thinks she's a goblin/leprechaun or even some kind of a ghost. If Sasami is 'just a kid' who can't do anything, how did she appear and disappear so easily?
Another incident of Sasami's magic is aboard the ghost ship in Sargasso. When Mirei is resurrected, it is Sasami she focuses on and we even see waves of energy coming from Sasami's sleeping form as Mirei comes to her. Sasami is also the only one who can see Mirei as she really is, the others can only see her as a ghost. Even Tenchi, with all his powers, just sees a whiteish blur enter the mirror with Sasami in tow. She also has potentially another impact in Sargasso, too. Yagami's engine dies while they're there, and Kiyone (I think) says that people are said to enter Sargasso and never leave. This suggests that the death of Yagami's engines is due to spectral energy (picked up later in the episode by Washu with one of her gadgets) and that logically this force is preventing them from moving. But when Sasami returns to the ship, Yagami's engines flare and power up again AS SOON AS SHE TOUCHES THE CONTROL PANEL. Coincidence this might or might not be, but it seems to be pretty convenient all the same.
At the end of the TU series, Sasami also has a "vision" - she can see the battle between Ayeka and Tenchi as it happens (although nobody else can.) It's true as well that Kamidake pays her particular attention when he comes out of his tree - of course, you could happily make amorous connections here and I've unashamedly done so. But it could also be seen as him recognising her inner power - he's more interested in Sasami than he is in Ayeka!
And finally there is the much ignored incident in Tenchi Forever, when Sasami is sent to Jurai to operate Jurai's Network and commune with the tree magic to find Tenchi. Not Ayeka, who we already know HAS Jurai's power and other magic besides from the end of the TV series. But Sasami, the "just a kid" girl. Why does Washu send her? Is it because Sasami has native magic that Ayeka doesn't, and a special connection with the trees of her planet?
I tend to think that the writers of the TU continuity are aware of Sasami's supposed magics, and that the hints are deliberate, not accidental. I think that to keep it fast-paced, a lot of detail is not dumped into the series. But the implication is that Sasami is something a little more than just a princess and sadly this has been overlooked on many occasions by fans looking for an obvious flag rather than an implied suggestion.
