1989:

BABY PONIES & PRETTY PALS

This was the last year that any kind of other animal species would be made as a proper part of the My Little Pony line. This year, Hasbro introduced four paired sets, including one baby pony and one baby animal, as bosom pals.

These sets were never sold in the United Kingdom, although they were definitely sold in parts of continental Europe (as I have Baby Fleecy and Baby Woolly mint in box from Germany, in a very European style box, borders and all!). I'm not sure why we were deprived them - but this did occasionally happen :S Mean Hasbro!

The above pictures are taken from this German packaged set (in case you're wondering where I nabbed them from!)

Although the concept of the set was quite original, there was some major memory lane walking going on with these four pairs. Old accessories such as the wagon sold with ponies as far back as 1986 were revived and re-used and these sets were each given a wide array of new toys.

1989 did really seem to be the year when Hasbro decided to give their baby ponies a fighting chance of being able to play!!

Of all the sets, Baby Leafy and Baby Lucky Leaf seem to be the hardest to track down.

BABY WOOLLY (White)
(Probably generically manufactured - not Hasbro)

It's also interesting to note that there exist some fakies made in the designs/moulds of the animals from this set. This includes a white baby Woolly and an alt. version of Baby Hoppy. Although these do not appear to be in any way linked to Hasbro, they are often also sought by collectors and seem to be found mostly in Europe.
