1989:
CANDY CANE PONIES
Yep, yet another set of scented ponies and yes, another bevy of incredibly sickly sweet foodish smells to contend with :)
The Candy Cane Ponies lived up to their name in that their hair - when new - was styled into ringlets that resembled a striped candycane. Each pony had a colour and creamy white in their hair to create the effect, though it must be noted that finding ponies on the second hand market with their ringlets still intact can be tough. As you can see by my Lemon Treats, they've often dropped out or been washed/brushed out all too easily by eager childhood hands!
This was another set for which only four of the six characters were officially released in the United Kingdom. There is also a UK box style for these ponies in the UK, which features the border (in pink) which was common for all ponies in this year's release. HOWEVER, there are also examples of US sold boxed Candy Cane ponies in the UK. Thanks to the help of Chrissytree and the MLP Arena, we now know for sure that Candy Cane Ponies were sold IN US BOXES in Woolworths (retailing at £6.99), and for this reason, there are occasional Mint Dreams and Lemon Treats which show up here second hand, even though they are not officially part of the UK set.
Each pony was sold with a comb, a ribbon and a clip.
Gingerbread was known as Molasses in the North American release. It is the ONLY example of a name being repeated in the UK line and not in the North American line!
