1994:
SURPRISE NEWBORN PONIES
The Surprise Newborns were a set of only three ponies, but they really were unnecessarily complicated. The set included one pose which was unique to the pony that had it - a new earth newborn pose which was, for some reason, introduced right at the death of My Little Pony. The other two ponies from the set used familiar earth newborn poses, and all three babies had pretty much solid colour schemes, but there the simplicity ended.

The plan for this set was to have a mysterious symbol hidden beneath a nappy which could be washed off. The nappy, once it had been washed off, was permanently lost, and so the baby came with a cloth nappy to wear instead. She had no other accessories.

This doesn't sound so very complicated, but Hasbro forgot to mention one small fact. That is, that there are more than one symbol variation for the babies in this set. Yes, they really did have 'Surprises', making it, technically, more than three baby ponies to collect. The backcard actually, cunningly shows the symbol options each baby pony can have in the form of the toys around them, though Snoozy's is only hinted at in the graphic instruction shown above.
Adding to this is the complication that they are some of the hardest to find UK Baby Ponies.
The set featured a couple of names familiar to previous years. For some reason, although most Newborn ponies do not have the prefix 'baby', these three girls do.
The name of the pony was NOT printed or stickered on the front of the card; you had to identify your pony based on the image on the back, which labelled the whole set clearly. This was not uncommon for this year's release of My Little Pony.
