1987: Twinkle Eye Ponies

LOCKET

Pink pegasus pony with white, pink, purple and coral mane and tail, pink and purple keys symbol.JEWELLED EYES.

Locket was one of the new characters in this set that did have a United Kingdom release. Possessing some kind of strange magic to do with keys and unfastening locks, it was Locket who was featured in the story that brought Baby Half Note to Ponyland - as it was Locket who tracked her down on her island by following an enchanted key. The factfile refers to her as having 'a special bunch of keys which means that she can open doors to lots of adventures.' And, if memory serves me, that's precisely what she does!

Locket also played a part in certain My Little Pony episodes onscreen - famously switching identities with Wind Whistler in the Quest of the Princess Ponies in an animation/voicing blip at the end.

In many ways, Locket is the token pink pony of the set. She featured one of the year's new poses, and I tend to think of her hair as sort of "ice cream" hair, because of it's colours and it's propensity to curl wildly. Though Locket as a pony herself is fairly easy to find on the second hand market, she often has frizzy or damaged hair and it can be difficult to find one in decent condition.

By dint of her issue in the United Kingdom set, Locket was sold (at least over here), with a round, puffy sticker.

In Germany, the set seems to have been more or less the same, but the cards were bordered in orange and bore a different design. These cards have often been confused with the UK release (by me as much as any!) because of their similarity to the UK design for the Party Ponies of the same year. Truth is, it's not completely clear whether both versions or just the one style were sold in the UK. Not enough packaged Twinkle Eye Ponies from that release have become available on the Ebay market yet to make any kind of guess, but no orange-bordered cards have yet surfaced in English.
