1986: Twinkle Eye Ponies
SWEET POP
Aqua blue pegasus pony with dark pink, yellow, pale pink and purple mane and tail, pink and yellow ice lollies symbol. JEWELLED EYES.
Ironically, by only being sold in the North American release, Sweet Pop's release is the least muddled of all three of this year's new characters. She was sold as an add on to the original set and she was not carried forward into the 1987 set. She was never part of the UK release, though she may have been released in other countries in Europe as part of a seperate edition. This is unclear, though I've yet to find evidence that she was. Certainly she did not feature in the set with Sky Rocket and Speedy that was packaged on the orange-bordered cards as "Augenstern-ponys" in Germany.
I think it's a shame she wasn't sold in the UK. She's actually a really pretty pony. In some ways she's Masquerade's missing partner, also. In the original six, the two unicorns (Fizzy and Galaxy) and the two earth ponies (Sweetie and Gingerbread) shared one pose. The two pegasus ponies, however, Whizzer and Masquerade, had two distinct poses. Sweet Pop stands in the same pose as Masquerade, and it begs the question whether she was the original partner for the first set, or whether it was always going to be Whizzer and that the different pose was just a coincidence...
Food for thought ^_^.
I'm assured that her symbols are ice lollies (or ice pops), though they look like pink energy saving light bulbs to me. Oh well. Each to their own.
The pale pink in Sweet Pop's hair can fade to white - this is not a variation, just sun-damage.
