Guren no Yami
(Crimson Darkness)
Akechi Mitsuhide was a historical figure who rebelled against and destroyed Oda Nobunaga in 1582, only to be hunted down and killed 11 days later. This song, from Sengoku Musou, embraces the spirit of his revolt, but also suggests a man in conflict with himself. Whether this was true of the historical Mitsuhide or not, the way the song is written cleverly parallels doubts with the resolve. Of course, conveying this is harder in English because of the different word order, but I have done my best.

Cutting away my doubts and hesitations,
for there is only one way forth
If unparalleled loyalty lies in
raising the flag of revolt
I will strike you down with these hands (can I strike you?)
Without doubt (truly)
I will rebel against you, my Lord*, gallantly
Going forth is the darkness
Stopping is also dark
But I can no longer turn back
(rumbling) the voice of a demon spirit
Is it an illusion?
"The time is coming, the time is now,
You can't turn back again"
(There is no other) there is no other
(Nobody else) nobody else
(Surely can do this) Surely can do this
I will go forth.
Through mountains and fields, scented by the wind
Embracing this mad, distraught resolve
If I let him escape me today
Then I shall surely never overcome him at all
(is there) No other way
Can I see (in this world?)
You are dear to me, and for that reason
Sprinting to darkness, the dawn is dark too
A leader of exceptional domination
(I will destroy) This duty I will
Take to the bitter end
My hand, throw it forth, the arrow of revolt
I will show you my rebellion
(You) You
(shooting) Shooting you is impassioned, fierce
(flames) crimson, blazing emotion
Going forth is darkness, stopping is also dark
From within this hell here on earth
(I have no voice) a courageous voice
Calls to me;
"The time is coming, the time is now,
You can't turn back again"
(There is no other) there is no other
(Nobody else) nobody else
(Surely can do this) Surely can do this
I will go forth.

*The lyrics actually don't say 'my lord' (wa ga tono) but they use the honorific 'sourou' suffix which implies Mitsuhide addresses this line directly to his lord, Nobunaga, who he is plotting to kill. For this reason I have translated it as 'my lord'.
